Emergency crews and Epcor responded to a water main break in downtown Edmonton Friday night. Edmonton Fire Rescue Services spokeswoman Maya Filipovic said fire crews received a call around 9:20 p.m. that an eight-inch water main had broken in front of a Best Buy. The water affected 109 Street between 103 Avenue and 104 Avenue, closing the intersection. It was open again by Saturday morning. Epcor spokeswoman Kelly Struski said crews on scene closed water valves to isolate the break. “Water main breaks are pretty common this time of year. When you get the cold weather and frost is down deep in the ground, it can cause the water mains to shift and it can cause them to break,” said Struski. “They are more common when we see these cold temperatures.” Edmonton had been on a 15-day run of the mercury falling below -20 C, with Environment Canada just lifting an extreme cold warning for the region Friday. Environment Canada had forecast a high of -17 C Saturday with some snow. The forecast for Sunday is -17 C with a chance of flurries. By Saturday morning, nearby sidewalks and parking lots were still icy but vehicle traffic on the roadway was moving normally. ![]() ![]() A police officer works at the scene of a huge water line break near 104 Avenue and 109 Street on Friday, Feb. 15, 2019. ![]() EPCOR crews work at the scene of the water line break near 104 Avenue and 109 Street. ![]() A man wades through the water near following a water main break downtown on Feb. 15, 2019. ![]() A car tries to drive through a huge puddle after a water main break near 104 Avenue and 109 Street on Friday, Feb. 15, 2019. |
