City calls on province, feds for $1.1 billion in affordable housing funding. （The City of Edmonton is asking the governments of Alberta and Canada to commit to spending $1.127 billion over five years on affordable housing in the capital city.） The City of Edmonton is asking the provincial and federal governments to provide billions in funding for affordable housing over the next five years. Mayor Don Iveson said Monday the city is asking for $1.127 billion as Edmonton is prepared to build 5,000 new affordable housing units. All that is needed is funding. The units would include 3,653 apartments, 920 permanent supportive housing suites, 180 secondary suites, 233 seniors’ apartments, and 14 developer-sponsored projects. Council has already approved $140 million in funding during its 2019-2022 budget deliberations to support the developments. The Edmonton Non-Profit Housing Provider Working Group, a self-organized group of affordable housing providers in Edmonton, said more than 48,500 households are currently in housing need, where at least 30 per cent of income is spent to maintain adequate housing. Of those households, 22,350 spend more than half of their gross income on housing costs, which puts them at risk of losing their housing or being unable to afford other essentials. Many of the affordable housing providers in the working group have projects that are “shovel ready” where land has been secured and buildings have been designed. The only element left for the projects to go forward is funding. “There are thousands of people in real need, including families with children, sitting on wait lists for affordable housing right now,” said Greg Dewling, CEO of Capital Region Housing and chairman of the working group in a news release. “We are ready to put shovels in the ground right now to add 5,000 homes for Edmontonians to live in.” ajunker@postmedia.com |
