Commuter Alert: Groat Road Bridge closed due to 'crane incident'.![]() The Groat Road Bridge is closed in both directions due to an “incident involving a construction crane,” city officials warned Wednesday afternoon. Adriana Amelio, spokeswoman for the City of Edmonton, said the crane suffered a “wheel derailment.” The bridge is in the midst of a major two-year, $48-million rehabilitation project and is normally down to just one lane of traffic in each direction while the work is underway. As a result of the crane problem, the bridge is completely closed to traffic and pedestrians while crews work to get the crane back in place. “Workers need to be able to be on the side where they currently have traffic in order to lift it back up onto its rail,” said Amelio. “So that’s why they closed it to traffic, they need that space, and it’s a safety issue as well.” Groat Road is closed on the north side of the river at 107 Avenue, while traffic headed westbound on Victoria Park Road is being directed north onto Groat Road. Traffic using Groat Road on the south side of the river is being diverted at Emily Murphy Park Road. River Valley Road is closed under Groat Road. No injuries or damage is reported at the site. Crews are working to restore traffic as quickly as possible, Amelio said. Once the crane is lifted back workers will inspect it for safety and once they give the all clear, the bridge will re-open to traffic. It is expected the closure will continue into the evening. ajunker@postmedia.com |
