Charges laid in slew of vehicle arsons off Whyte Avenue.

(Edmonton police arrested one person after more than a dozen cars were targeted by an arsonist on Friday, April 12, 2019.)

A 22-year-old man who allegedly set fire to 13 cars on Whyte Avenue Friday evening is facing multiple charges.

At approximately 8:40 p.m., Friday, Edmonton police responded to a call of multiple vehicles on fire in the area of 104 Street and 83 Avenue, police said in a news release Sunday.

A man on foot was pouring fuel on vehicles and setting them on fire.

Multiple videos circulating on social media showed the man carrying a jerry can and setting the fluid on fire after it was poured on multiple vehicles.

The man crossed 104 Street and headed into a Starbucks where he was apprehended through a citizen’s arrest involving a man wearing a Hawaiian shirt and a man with what appeared to be a 2×4 — both characterized online as “Hawaiian shirt guy” and “2×4 guy.”

They were able to diffuse the situation and control the suspect in the coffee shop until police arrived, police said.

No one was injured but 13 vehicles were damaged.

Malice Sutton, 22, has been charged with 11 counts of arson to the property of others (damage), three counts of arson to property (disregard for human life), four counts of possessing incendiary material and assault with a weapon.
