May 19, 2019. ) Edson RCMP are evacuating people on the north and south side of highway 16 near Marlborough, which is approximately 15 km west of Edson. There are homes at risk in the area as the wildfire has jumped the highway and is now burning on both sides of the highway. Police are asking people to avoid the area and have stopped traffic on the highway due to the conditions. A wildfire burning south of the Town of High Level has jumped a highway, prompting warnings from fire officials. While there’s no imminent threat to the town, Alberta Emergency Alert issued an information alert about the fire Sunday afternoon. The alert said the fire is burning west of Highway 35 and south of Highway 58. It is heading northwest, and smoke from the blaze is visible from town. Alberta Wildfire said the Chuckegg Creek fire is out of control and rated at 25,334 hectares in size. Prevailing winds were not pushing the fire in the town’s direction, the agency said just after 3 p.m. Sunday. Neither the town nor the nearby Norbord manufacturing plant were under immediate threat at the time of the alert, which was issued just after 1 p.m. By around 2:30 p.m., the fire had jumped Highway 58 about 32 km west of High Level. Officials said there was a risk electrical services could be affected. Residents were advised to remain vigilant, review their family emergency procedures and keep an eye on the municipality’s Facebook page for updates. The town said Saturday afternoon that Highway 35 south was blocked due to fire activity. “If evacuation is required, Highway 88 would be a safe route from the hazard area,” the alert states.
