Two dead, six injured after an incident at Canada Olympic Park

Mike Drew/Postmedia Mike Drew/Postmedia Network Police and paramedics were called around 1:30 a.m. to the WinSport facility to respond to several people injured on the closed track. “It’s believed at least eight teenagers, all males, entered the property after hours and used a personal sled or toboggan in an attempt to go down the bobsled track,” duty Staff Sgt. Paul Wyatt told reporters gathered at the scene. About mid-way down, they crashed into a large gate used to separate the bobsled and luge tracks, Wyatt said. When emergency workers arrived, they found eight people, all males in their late teens suffering from various injuries. Two died at the scene, three were taken to Foothills Hospital – one in critical condition with was later upgraded to stable – with various soft-tissue injuries in stable condition, and three were taken to Rockyview General Hospital with minor injuries, said EMS spokesman Adam Loria. In total, seven ambulances responded to the scene. Loria said EMS initially thought they were dealing with one patient but learned there were multiple people involved. He said emergency workers were challenged by low lighting and slippery sections of the facility, but were overall prepared to handle the “difficult situation.”

Mike Drew/Postmedia Network Police had originally said they were looking for two teens, but had erred and are not looking for any additional people. Wyatt said police found vehicles at the scene believed to be connected to the group, which have been towed for examination. Wyatt said investigators are still trying to determine how and where the group got onto the track and are reviewing CCTV footage for clues. He said he’s unaware of security guards at the site at the time. “That’s part of the ongoing investigation, how they gained access into the property,” he said. Police are now working on reaching families of the teens involved. Barry Heck, president and CEO of WinSport issued a statement Saturday. “On behalf of WinSport, I would like to express our sincerest sympathies to the families of the two deceased. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families,” Heck said. “WinSport is working closely with the Calgary Police Service in their ongoing investigation. In addition, WinSport will conduct its own review of the incident.” All programs and lessons on the hill will continue as scheduled, WinSport said, but the half pipe and West Terrain park are closed. Athletes expecting to be able to gain access to the facility at the top of the hill were turned away by police, who had cordoned off a large area with yellow tape and kept the gate to the parking lot closed. Alastair Moody, who lives in the homes overlooking the track, said he didn’t hear emergency workers responding to the scene overnight but learned of the news after receiving a text message from a friend. Moody said he’s heard of people breaking in to access the ski hill after hours but never the bobsled-luge track. “It’s a terrible tragedy,” he said, while walking his dogs near the scene. “I feel sorry for the families.” cho@calgaryherald.com twitter.com/clara_ho (Calgary Herald) |
