Man killed after falling 70 feet at northern Alberta work site

Credit: Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Listen A 29-year-old man was killed Monday morning when he fell about 70 feet (21 metres) while working at a site in northern Alberta. Christine Wronko with Occupational Health and Safety said the man was doing scaffolding work on a new storage tank on a TransCanada pipeline project when he was killed. Wronko said it happened at around 10:45 a.m. Monday at a site about 100 kilometres north of Fort McMurray. The employee worked for a company called Horton CBI Ltd. OHS officers were called to the site Monday to investigate. Mark Cooper with TransCanada said the man was working on a tank terminal on the Northern Courier Pipeline Project when the fall happened. Work at the site has been suspended to allow time for workers to deal with the tragedy, Copper said. “We are deeply saddened by this and our first thought is with the family of the worker,” Cooper said. Cooper said TransCanada will comply with the OHS and RCMP investigations. Anything that comes from the investigations will be used in the future to ensure these types of things don’t happen again, Cooper added. The victim’s name has not been released.
