SCAN shuts down drug house in north Edmonton
House was scene of drug use, drug deals and 'prostitution-related activities'
A community safety order has been granted against the owner of this home at 9103 137th Avenue in north Edmonton. Investigators from the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) unit have shut down an Edmonton home frequented by drug users and drug dealers. A community safety order has been granted against the owner of the home at 9103 137th Avenue, the Alberta government said in a news release Thursday. The order was obtained Nov. 15 in Court of Queen's Bench. It gives SCAN the authority to close the property and bar any occupants from the house for 90 days. It also bans any visitors to the property for one year. The SCAN investigation was launched in April after a complaint was received that the home's owner and his girlfriend were involved in drug activity. Investigators substantiated the complaint and served the owner with a warning letter. Further investigation revealed the property was also being used for prostitution-related activities, and that drug-related activities were continuing. In May, SCAN called in the Edmonton Police Service after investigators observed an alleged drug deal between the woman who lived at the home and a man who had arrived by car. A police traffic stop later resulted in the seizure of 71 fentanyl pills, 25.5 grams of methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine and cash. The driver was charged with possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking. SCAN operates under the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act. It targets and shuts down properties that are regularly used for illegal activities, such as drugs, gangs, prostitution and child exploitation. Two SCAN units, operating out of northern and southern Alberta, work with municipal law enforcement and social services agencies. Many of the investigators are former police officers with investigative and surveillance experience. SCAN team members have scheduled a news availability in Edmonton early Thursday afternoon. |
