(Supplied by Mohamed Smith) An ETS bus driver has been charged under the Traffic Safety Act after the November death of a 13-year-old girl in a northeast Edmonton crosswalk. Investigators helped by a Crown prosecutor have charged the 62-year-old female driver with failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. If convicted, the penalty is a fine of $575 and four demerits. The pedestrian was identified by relatives as Mariama Sillah Around 7:40 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 26, Edmonton police responded to a report of a collision involving a pedestrian and an unknown vehicle at 137th Avenue and 40th Street. The girl had been crossing 137th Avenue southbound on 40th Street in a marked crosswalk when she was hit by an Edmonton Transit System bus and dragged a short distance.. The bus had been making a left turn from 40th Street southbound onto 137th Avenue from 40th Street. Police said earlier the bus didn't stop after the collision, and investigators believed the bus driver struck the girl unknowingly. The bus that police believe was involved in the collision was found at Coliseum Station later the same night. The girl was declared dead at the scene. Her death marked the second time in two months that a pedestrian had been killed by an ETS bus. On Oct. 4, an 83-year-old woman was killed after being struck by an ETS bus in a marked crosswalk in west Edmonton. The driver of that bus was charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian in a marked crosswalk. |
