Search resumes for missing snowshoers in B.C.The men have been missing since Christmas Day

(CBC) The search for two snowshoers missing near Cypress Mountain Resort resumed on Wednesday morning, but weather and avalanche concerns are hampering efforts. North Shore Rescue (NSR) spokesman Mike Danks said crews were scheduled to leave their Capilano Gate base at 8 a.m. PT., but heavy clouds delayed use of the Talon helicopter. Chun Sek Lam, 64, and Roy Tin Hou Lee, 43, have been missing since Christmas Day. Their car was found abandoned at the resort that afternoon. "We really feel this is kind of a make-or-break day for these guys," Danks said.

(West Vancouver Police) Nearly two dozen volunteers spent Monday and Tuesday looking for the men, who are described as "experienced" but unprepared for an overnight trip. On Tuesday, Danks said crews made voice contact with someone near Mount Strachan around 1:30 p.m. PT. However, the spokesman said that turned out to be another out-of-bounds skier or snowboarder. "We were really hopeful that was going to be the missing snowshoers, so that was tough for us," Danks said. "It's a challenge because we have people constantly jumping the ropes and getting into the search area we're trying to focus on," he added, reminding the public to stay on marked trails.

(CBC) NSR has already spent a "considerable" amount of time canvassing Hollyburn, Black and Strachan mountains, but Danks said crews are going to be focusing on the latter for Wednesday's search. "We've had tips come in from hikers that were in the area on Christmas Day, saying they'd seen two Asian males snowshoeing on the Howe Sound Crest Trail new Yew Lake and also by Strachan Meadows," the spokesman said. "For us, that's a big bonus because we really had nothing to go on prior to that." Danks said rescue crews will be keeping recent avalanche advisories top-of-mind as they search to avoid endangering any volunteers. 'All we can do is be hopeful'On Tuesday, the spokesman said it was "very concerning" that the missing snowshoers were going into their third night on the mountain.He said the pair didn't leave a detailed plan before they went on their trip, making them near-impossible to track. "We don't know what has happened to them," Danks said. Did they lose the trail? Did somebody fall and get hurt? "We just don't know what the reality is."

(CBC) That said, NSR crews are staying optimistic. "All we can do is be hopeful and keep in mind that they have each other to stay positive, to keep each other warm and to keep each other occupied," Danks said. "Two guys can do a lot more to build a shelter than one person." The spokesman noted that a snowboarder was found safe after spending three days lost in Vancouver's North Shore mountains in 2012. "I think it really comes down to the will to survive and being able to get yourself into a safe area where you can stay somewhat warm." With files from Kamil Karamali, The Early Edition |
