Fourteen-year-old Ethan Dizon, who was in Grade 9 at St. Thomas More School, died early Sunday, said a statement from the Edmonton Catholic School District.

On Nov. 3, a 13-year-old boy who also attended the school took his own life, Catholic school district spokeswoman Lori Nagy said. 

“Ethan, I’ll miss you every day, and I love you. … You were my little brother and I love you so, so much,” Dizon’s older sister Chloe posted online Monday.

Chloe is petitioning the Catholic school district to open an investigation into the suicides at St. Thomas More — particularly accusations of bullying. She said her brother showed no warning signs he was contemplating suicide.

In a Facebook post, Ethan’s mother Peggy said her son was an honour student with many friends and a great sense of humour.

District staff do not believe the two deaths are related, Nagy said.

Following both deaths, the school district’s crisis response team was at the school, Nagy said. Three mental-health specialists from Alberta Health Services were on-site Tuesday to help grieving students and staff, she said.

“In our continuing conversations with St. Thomas More students, including Ethan Dizon’s closest friends, bullying has never been identified as a concern at the school,” Nagy said in an email.

If any student feels their classmates are treating them inappropriately, they should tell an adult they trust to pass that information to school administrators, Nagy said.

The school district is planning an information session for St. Thomas More parents within the next couple of weeks that will include health-care workers and police. They’ll discuss how to spot red flags for possible mental-health problems in their children, and strategies for talking to their children.

Last spring, the Catholic school board adopted a new mental health plan, which aims to accelerate prevention and awareness of mental-health problems.
