(Roberta Bell/CBC) Edmonton's fire investigation team is investigating a duplex fire that sent two men to hospital in critical condition. Fire crews were called to the home near 118th Avenue and 124th Street at around 11 p.m. Friday, where a fire was spotted burning on the west side of the building. Acting Capt. Ian Waddell of Edmonton's fire investigation team said three tenants live in the duplex. Two men were carried out of the residence on stretchers and taken to hospital. Alberta Health Services said both patients were in critical condition.

It could have gotten a lot worse than it was," Waddell said, adding the fire was extinguished by 1 a.m. "They found the patients really fast and that will probably aid in their survivial." Mike Wilderman, who lives in the neighbourhood, said he heard the sirens and saw the stretchers coming out the front door of the duplex. "I looked out my door and there were lights everywhere," he said. "There were like five fire trucks, at least two ambulances, police cars — they blocked off the street." Wilderman didn't see the flames, but said he saw smoke billowing from the house. Cause still unknownThe fire was in a bedroom, Waddell said. A window was boarded up on the west side of the duplex. Scorched green siding was peeling from the structure.

He said the west duplex is not liveable, although the east duplex, which was undamaged, is. The City of Edmonton is working to find the tenants of the west duplex a place to stay. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. "We want to find out what started the fire and the circumstances leading up to the fire," Waddell said. "It could be a few weeks by the time that we're completely finished." |
