Guns, drugs seized in Yellowknife bust with links to Edmonton Six people were arrested in Yellowknife on Wednesday, May 31, 2017.RCMP / POSTMEDIA Mounties say have busted an Edmonton-based drug trafficking network that recently set up shop in Yellowknife. Six of the seven people arrested on Wednesday were charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, careless storage of a firearm, and possession of the proceeds of crime exceeding $5,000. About 170 grams of cocaine, 445 grams of marijuana, $20,000 cash, and a shotgun were among the items seized. "We believe this group is part of a larger drug trafficking network based out of Edmonton and that they recently set up shop in Yellowknife after a hiatus of several years," RCMP 'G' Division federal investigations unit Sgt. Dean Riou said in a release. The arrests are the culmination of a two week investigation that centred on a downtown area apartment, a campsite at the Fred Henne Territorial Campground and two vehicles were searched during Wednesday evening. "Upon hearing of their return to the community, we made this group an enforcement priority," Riou said. "Our intensive, two week investigation hopefully sent a clear message to them that the Northwest Territories, including Yellowknife, is not open for their business." Howard Beaumont, 37, of Edmonton and Yellowknife, Brandon Baxandall, 24, of Edmonton and Yellowknife, Jordan Minute, 28, of Edmonton, Sechiah Norwegian, 24, of Yellowknife, Travis King, 20, of Yellowknife and Brandin Dyer, 24, of Yellowknife, remain in custody and will appear in court on June 5. |
