Industrial instrument company opens new Edmonton training facility A major Swiss industrial instrument company officially opened a $12-million Edmonton facility Friday expected to provide training in this field for hundreds of people annually. Basel-based Endress+Hauser has more than 13,000 employees — including 134 in Canada — who design, manufacture, install and service instruments that measure temperature, flow, pressure and other properties of gases and liquids, such as the amount of water running through a pipe. The family-owned company’s new Edmonton regional sales and service centre includes the country’s first process training unit, a plant with oil and water pipes where up to 240 engineers, technicians and students a year will receive hands-on experience, Canadian general manager Anthony Varga said. “This is a community training facility. It’s not just to train people on Endress + Hauser instruments. It’s really to train instrumentation and process control concepts.” The site, at 9045 22 Ave. SW, started operating late last year and has 23 staff, although Varga said the number should grow this year with the recovery of the oil and gas sector, their biggest Alberta customers. The company built the facility in Edmonton because it’s central to the oilsands and the rest of the oilpatch as well as clients in Saskatchewan, Varga said. “The skills they’re going to learn here are far, far deeper than they will learn in a classroom.” gkent@postmedia.com twitter.com/GKentYEG |
