 Emergency crews are seen at a house fire at 17808 93 St., Sunday night. Three people pulled from a burning home on Edmonton's north side are fighting for their lives in hospital Monday. The fire broke out in the kitchen of the single-family home at 17808 93 St. around 9:30 Sunday evening. The fire was caused by over-heated cooking oil which was left unattended for a few minutes, according to a Monday news release by Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS). The fire was contained to the kitchen and under control 20 minutes later. Firefighters performed CPR on two teenagers extracted from the second floor suffering from smoke inhalation. One of the teens was in critical life-threatening condition, Alberta Health Services spokesperson Jennifer Green said. A young adult believed to be somewhere between 17 and 20 years old was also listed in critical condition Monday morning. A 75-year-old adult also in the home was taken in serious condition with injuries to his airway and high levels of carbon monoxide. Investigators estimate damage to the home at $400,000 and $100,000 in content lost. According to the EFRS, in 2016, there were 69 over-heated cooking oil fires, which resulted in 42 civilian and seven firefighter injuries, and six civilian deaths. jwakefield@postmedia.com |
