Edmonton police are at a strip mall in Edmonton's Carlisle neighbourhood after a gunman opened fire, striking one man as others fled.

Officers were called to a 7-Eleven convenience store at 11868 145 Ave. at 4:40 p.m. Sunday.

Edmonton Police Services spokeswoman Noreen Remtulla said a man is in life-threatening condition after being shot. Police said an argument happened outside a convenience store in Castle Downs.

Shattered glass lay on the ground outside the store after what one witness called a gunfight.

"A couple SUVs pulled up, a few people fled, I guess there was a conflict of some kind," said David McDonald. "They started opening fire."

Witness Steve Blanes said he was leaving the 7-Eleven when he heard shots that sounded like they were coming from a shotgun or large-calibre weapon.

He saw two men fleeing from the back corner of the shopping centre near a Mediterranean restaurant.

"Three individuals, two of them obviously running for their lives with another large man, over six-feet tall wearing — he was prepared for this — black pants, black hoodie, as well as a balaclava that was not pulled down.

"He was running and shooting at the two young men. One of them split off from the 7-Eleven going west, the other went inside the 7-Eleven, tripped."

The large man tried shooting at the man through the window as he was on the floor, than ran back for a grey Dodge SUV and fled, Blanes said.

Two people out of the six people involved fled the scene, he said.

McDonald heard four or five shots in total.

It was not immediately known if there were injuries or fatalities.

"It was intense," he said.
