Red Deer Mounties have laid charges after a man robbed a downtown pharmacy by threatening staff with a needle he claimed was infected.

Police say the man entered the Ross Street IDA Pharmacy around 2 p.m. Wednesday and demanded morphine from the staff, telling them he had Hepatitis C while holding a syringe he said was infected.

He left the scene with an undisclosed amount of drugs.

On Saturday, shortly after 1 p.m., officers located the suspect and arrested him without incident.

Michael Wayne Demas, 41, of Red Deer, was charged with two counts of robbery with a weapon, failure to comply with a probation order, and possession of a prohibited substance.

He was expected to appear in court Tuesday morning.
