Hitchhiker killed near Sherwood Park was a 'free spirit', says sister Phoenix Taypayosatum, 28, was hitchhiking from Edmonton to Camrose to try and patch things up after a family fight when he was struck by a vehicle and killed at the intersection of Highway 21 and Township Road 520 on the outskirts of Sherwood Park. A hitchhiker killed early Wednesday near Sherwood Park was heading home to Camrose to patch things up after a family fight, his sister said. Witnesses found Phoenix Taypayosatum, 28, shortly before 4 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 21 and Township Road 520 after being struck by an unknown northbound vehicle. His younger sister, Autumn Taypayosatum, said in an interview that Phoenix, his girlfriend and their 11 month old daughter had been staying with her in Camrose up until Dec. 14. Phoenix hitchhiked to Edmonton after a family fight and was returning home to see his girlfriend when the accident happened, she said. “He was understanding, very loving and we always kept in contact when he was gone,” she said. “That whole time he was gone in Edmonton he kept in contact with me.” Autumn said her brother was always hitchhiking, in fact, when she was 18, the pair hitchhiked from their home in Winnipeg to Regina and then onto Edmonton. Soon after arriving in Edmonton she moved to Camrose. “He was a free spirit,” she said. “He was a traveller. He hitchhiked all over. “If he didn’t feel right in one place, he would go to another place.”  Phoenix Taypayosatum. FACEBOOK One of eight siblings who were all brought up in foster care in Winnipeg, the brother and sister first met when he was 17 and she was 13. “We’ve been in contact ever since then,” she said. “I was there for him and he was there for me.” Autumn said police intend to release the body on Tuesday at which point he will be taken back to Winnipeg for a service at Thunderbird House on Jan. 7. RCMP are still trying to piece together the details of what happened leading up to the fatal collision and are looking for witnesses who may have seen Phoenix hitchhiking between 9 p.m. on Dec. 27 and 3:45 a.m. on Dec 28. At the time of the crash, the six-foot tall Phoenix was wearing dark denim jeans, a navy blue three-quarter length jacket with grey scarf and black gloves.
